BSA606- Episode Review Queens Gambit Episode 1
I have started watching a new series on Netflix called Queen's Gambit.
So far I have gathered that its about a girl who becomes a chess prodigy.
In this first episode, it discusses lives of orphans in what I think is the 1950's. The girls are given two types of pills, vitamins and tranquillizer.
The tranquillizer pill is a big part of this story as our main character relies on them, after being told by another girl to eat them at night. She gets addicted to the feeling on the tranquillizer and is on them for a while before the law then bans the use of tranquillizers on children.
She gets withdrawal symptoms and seeks them out. After breaking into the medical room and overdosing she is completely taken off of them.
What I liked about this episode as an opening episode tot the series is that it created the frame of the character, a genius who relies on pills. She is easily addicted and seeks out addiction. At first its the pills and then chess. Chess is her life.
She lives in a time where woman are looked down on, she chooses what is typically a male game and seeks to dominate it.
It becomes very obvious very quickly that Beth is antisocial. or rather she only interacts with people when she absolutely has to, with the exception of Jolene.
This first episode has me hooked onto the show and I will be watching more of it.
