Phil moved away from stop-motion and into CGI because the animators of his studio where better equipped to create and make the cgi move better and look real than 'a bunch of computer nerds'. They used the puppets covered in sensors to create their stop-motion/cgi hybrid.
he had to move away from Stopmotion because it was becoming outdated, but he had the skills to make something look real and alive.
“What Phil’s done that makes him unique and special is that — besides advancing the art of stop-frame animation — he manages to put character into motion into these little puppets that he manipulates, and he does so with a fanboy glee.”

The Go Motion is a version of stopmotion where motion blur is added to each frame involving motion, the methods included smearing Vaseline on the camera and bumping the puppet or table during exposure.
It created a smoother looking animation.

Dynamation is the technique created by Ray Harryhausan, where the movie is screened behind the stop-motion via a projector, with glass in front and black paint on the side, then the camera catches it all from the front. the film is advanced one frame at a time and the stopmotion model in moved along with it.

I prefer Ray Harryhaussans works because they were more dynamic and interesting looking. his characters had a life that couldn't be replicated. I also love the fact that he drew his inspiration from mmythology, and the time he took to make each movie he worked on fantastic.
Although I do love the fact that Phil Tippet took LSD and talked to his cat Brian.
