BSA606-Christopher Nolan and Alfred Hitchcock Blog Task

Hitchcock's intention with the shower scene was to switch the audiences perception of Marion and Norman Bates. It paints Marion in a more innocent light, as she considers perhaps taking the stolen money back. For Norman it makes him seem like a poor innocent boy who is locked within his mothers way as he cleans up the crime after.

This scene is important because it paints Norman Bates as innocent, since we don't actually see the face of the killer, but we know the silhouette of the mother. Therefore we think the mother killed her. It is also the most iconic part of the movie, because we are lead to believe right from the start that we will be following Marion's story through to the end.

Techniques

  • Staccato music
  • Suspense before the crime
  • A calm start
  • Audience perception twisted.
  • Framing- framing Marion's head lower that the top of the frame, giving audience room to see the killer
